Congratulations to our new kids Student of the Month Jordan Vega! Since coming to our academy about 8 months ago, Jordan has grown both as a practitioner of Jiu-Jitsu and as a person. He continues to be a huge part of our kids program, and you will always see him first in line to help out our younger and newer students. Keep up the great work Jordan! There is no limit to what you can achieve if you continue to work this hard!

Today is the 8 yr Anniversary of Savarese Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In 8 short years, we went from a little hole in the wall on Stuyvesant Ave to our new 5000 sq ft, 2 room facility on Park Ave. I would like to thank all my students, parents, friends, supporters and the township of Lyndhurst New Jersey for all their support over the years. Special thanks to Sean J L Bermudez and Michele Culmone for their hard work in keeping this place running smoothly. I look forward to many great years together as I am confident that our team and family will grow larger, stronger and wiser in the future. 8/27/14 The Subject of Steroids

By |Aug 27, 2014|Categories: Savarese Jiu Jitsu News||0 Comments

I wanted to write a blog about steroid use in MMA after reading that an instructor at the original Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy tested positive but forgot about it. Keith Owen, a Pedro Sauer blackbelt from Idaho, (kudos Keith ) wrote a blog this morning and got my juices flowing again. Those who know me know I am very anti-PED (Perfomance Enhancing Drugs). I am overcome w/ sadness after reading this piece of news this week. BJJ athletes all over the country and world are getting popped for PEDs. I will never understand this. Are we this weak? For the last 18 years, I have been studying this GREAT art of ours and still hold the belief that it is the most effective 1 on 1 martial art on the planet. The level of our best practitioners in at an all-time high. Many got there through hard work, dedication and gaining mental strength over a period of training. What happened to these attributes? When did we become so weak and insecure that we lost the confidence and drive to apply the principles and techniques that our instructors taught us? Do you think that Helio and Carlos would ever turn to steroids it they failed? Do you think our art would be so strong without testing itself? Steroid users go against everything a martial artist should be. Where is your spirit of the art you represent? The spirit of art should be the celebration of the human spirit, body and mind, and characterized by the following values: Ethics, fair play, honesty, health, excellence in performance, character, dedication, respect for your opponent and rules, courage and commitment. If you are doing drugs, you hold NONE of these attributes. Taking […]

Congrats to Rob Brussel on earning his bluebelt from Professor Savarese tonight!! It has been a long road for Rob, a journey that has taken almost 2 years. Rob has shown strength and intestinal fortitude to overcome obstacles in life and to his credit, he stuck with it and NEVER QUIT, a trait many others don’t show. I am as proud of you as I have ever been of a student. Congrats brother!!
