Martial Arts Belleville

Savarese Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy is the one you are looking for if you are looking for the best martial arts school near Belleville, NJ. The award winning Lyndhurst Martial Arts school is located on Park Ave in Lyndhurst NJ and has many students from Belleville.  It is considered by many in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)community as not only one of the top martial arts schools in northern NJ, but one of the top Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools in the USA. Professor Chris Savarese, the owner and head instructor, is one of the first American blackbelts under the legendary Royler Gracie, son of the Grandmaster of Jiu-Jitsu, Helio Gracie. Savarese BJJ offers classes taught with and without the traditional jiu-jitsu kimono (uniform). Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling martial art widely regarded as the single most effective form of self-defense. It incorporates takedowns, escapes, reversals, and submissions like chokes and armlocks while emphasizing positional dominance over your opponent. Our certified instructors recognize that each student is an individual with unique goals, various martial arts backgrounds, and differing levels of fitness. As you begin your training, in our 16 week long Fundamentals class course, beginners master the basic positions and techniques of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Each class begins with a specialized warm-up: exercises that train the body movements unique to BJJ grappling. This includes training hip movement, gripping, pushing and pulling. After the warm-up, the instructor teaches a common BJJ position of ground fighting. As you work through the BJJ Fundamentals program, you develop an awareness of what to do (and not do) in all the possible positions of ground martial arts because our belief is, that is where almost all self-defense confrontations end up. After you pass a test covering all the basic positions of BJJ, you move on to the Advanced BJJ classes.

ADVANCED BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU

In the Advanced BJJ classes at Savarese BJJ, the instructor addresses questions about the fine details of positions and gives every advanced BJJ student the chance to work on positions he or she is trying to master. These techniques cover all aspects and positions of Jiu Jitsu such as takedowns, reversals and sweeps, transitions, and submissions. Classes include solo and partner drills, technical instruction, Q&A, and situational drills with resistance. After the positions are studied with a partner, there is live sparring in the second half of the class. Live sparring is what separates BJJ from other martial arts as BJJ is the only art where you spar live every day.

NO-GI GRAPPLING FOR MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

In the “no gi†Advanced BJJ classes, students wearrashguards and shorts, rather than the traditional BJJ gi. Otherwise, these classes are the same as Advanced BJJ classes. Savarese Jiu-Jitsu has flexible class times and there’s a class that can fit even the busiest of schedules. Chances to train are available on weekday nights, weekday early mornings, lunchtime, and weekends!

Gracie Self Defense

We also offer Our Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Self Defense, Women’s Only and Kids classes. Our Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Self-Defense program is one of the only programs in NJ that offers the original curriculum that was taught by our Grandmaster Helio Gracie at the original Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Rio De Janiero, Brazil. The course includes over 100 techniques that could literally save your life during a real street confrontation.  Jiu-Jitsu is a great combat sport, but self defense is a very overlooked aspect of BJJ. Far too many BJJ schools focus only on sport competition and point tournaments. While we teach those lessons as well at Savarese BJJ, we have several dedicated times each week where our students can learn real world techniques in our self defense class. Professor Savarese is one of the first US born blackbelts under Royler Gracie and he teaches these classes that involve every aspect of self-defense including gun, knife and bat/club attacks.

Women Only Self-Defense and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

The Women’s Self Defense is also offered at Savarese BJJ Academy. In these classes women study how to use leverage, flexibility, and body mechanics to achieve control over any situation. Punches, kicks, and throws are not used in jiu-jitsu. Our Women’s program was specifically designed to prepare women for real life threatening situations. Our Self Defense techniques provide the knowledge and skills for any woman to escape from her attacker, whether she is on her feet or on the ground. This course is unique because it does not rely exclusively on punching and kicking like other forms of martial arts. Punching and kicking do not represent an effective strategy against an assailant who is bigger, stronger and capable of hitting back. In addition, they are useless on the ground, which is where a rapist/attacker is most likely to assault a woman. It is structured to achieve maximum comfort for females interested in pursuing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. With proper technique, and disciplined practice, it is possible to redirect and use an aggressor’s strength against him. You’ll have the skills to defend yourself and get away. The idea is that the weaker and smaller can fight the bigger and stronger. This art is the best self-defense martial arts for women…period. We believe most attacks end up on the ground and we teach you how to defend yourself from there. offers Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes exclusively for women. In these training sessions, women can work with each other and learn to defend themselves on the ground. Although women are encouraged to participate in our Academy’s regular, mixed gender classes, these women-only training sessions provide a safe space for women to learn the art of BJJ, increase their knowledge of self-defense, and get a great workout. You will learn in a very safe way chokes and joint locks that can save your life!

Unlike many other martial arts schools, we offer night classes as well for families in which both parents work. The best way to get a sense of the practical benefits we provide is to stop by and watch a class!
